Greetings. I am delighted to meet you all through this newsletter and share many works we have done so far.

Village Development (RUPA Project)

Eye camp

On September 22nd, DAIA and Dr.Agarwal’s Eye Hospital organized a free ophthalmology camp for the people of 4 villages namely Jambulingapuram, Pudupatcheri, S.Pudur and Veerapandiyapuram. 158 people participated and benefited. Jambulingapuram Panchayat President Ms. Selvarani and Chinnadurai, Secretary Ms. Bappi welcomed the group with bouquets of flowers. The people were treated for cataracts, near-sightedness, far-sightedness and other eye problems. Panchayat leaders and villagers commented that this camp was very useful for their people.

Empowerment Scheme

Mrs. S. Jothilakshmi (45 years) lives in Pudur village. She is a daily labourer. She requested that it would be helpful if we buy her chickens so as to increase her income. She was provided with 5 chickens.

 

Mrs. Muniyammal (45 years) lives in Pudur village. She goes for daily wages. She requested that it would be helpful if we buy her chickens so as to increase her income. She was provided with 5 chickens.

 

Mrs.Rathiyamma (55 years) lives in S.Pudur village. She is unmarried and is living under the care of her brother. She goes for daily wages. She requested to provide him with goats. She is determined to increase his economic status. We provided two goats.

 

Mrs S.Nattaramma (77 years) lives in Pudur village. Her husband passed away many years age. She could not go for outside work. She requested to provide her with goats. She is looking forward to a better economic status in the near future. We provided two goats.

 

Mrs.Subbulakshmi (33 years) lives in Pudur village. She studied tailoring at the tailoring school run by DAIA. She requested a machine for her to start a business at home. This will help her in increasing her monthly income. We provided the sewing machine.

 

Mrs. Linga Pushpam (33 years) Pudupatcheri village with children. Her husband recently met with an accident and now unable to go for job. She is already doing tailoring business. But her sewing machine is small and slow. She requested for power sewing machine to improve her business and increase her income. We provided her a power sewing machine.

Leadership Meeting

On Sep 27th, at the Jambulingapuram Panchayat office, there was a discussion about the role of the leaders of the village development project, how the work of DAIA is, and how our contribution should be to the development of our village along with the people. The panchayat president who participated said that the economic development program is more beneficial for the people. The village administration officer said that by conducting tailoring training, many women are able to earn on their own. Mrs.Gandhimathi, a volunteer of Pudu Yugam charity organization, said that many women started saving through the economic development program and the awareness created by DAIA. She also expressed that it was only after attending the meeting that one of her friends and herself came to know that they had to deal with so much in hygiene during menstruation. She also added that now they are following a hygienic system. It was also discussed how public toilets could be repaired in collaboration with the people.

Health and Hygiene Awareness Program

On September 6th, awareness was created among the people in the villages of Jambulingapuram, S. Pudur and Pudupatcheri about the hygiene practices to be observed during menstruation. Everyone participated enthusiastically.

Tailoring Centre

The tailoring centers started in Jumbulingapuram and S.Pudur is progressing well. 8 women are studying in Jumbulingapuram and 11 women are studying in S.Pudur. The women are undergoing tailoring classes are participating with much interest and enthusiasm.

Adult Literacy

Adult Literacy Program was held in the villages of S. Pudur, Pudupacherry and Jambulingapuram. All the participants were taught general knowledge. The capital cities of each country and the culture of that state were taught, and the questions raised by the people were answered. 

Financial Literacy

The economic development program for all the beneficiaries took place in the villages. They shared about further improvement of their livelihood. Everyone attended with interest.

Medical Camp

Tuticorin

On September 3rd, 41 patients attended the medical camp held at Zion Church, Tuticorin. Mrs.Eben Jason delivered uplifting message. Dr.Mummoorthy examined the patients. Medicines, tonics, and nutrition powder were distributed. The camp ended with a simple nutritious meal.

Kovilpatti

On September17th , 50 patients attended the medical camp at St. Paul’s Church, Kovilpatti. Mr.Francis delivered encouraging message. Dr.Mummoorthy examined the patients. Medicines, tonics, and nutrition powder were distributed. Their weight was monitored and recorded. The camp ended with a good meal.

Embracing Elders

On Sep 14th, 44 elders attended the camp at Zion Church, Tuticorin. Mr.Francis delivered uplifting message. They were given groceries and nutrition powder. Their weight was monitored and recorded. The camp ended with a good meal. 

Tuition centre- TATA Proengage

We conduct tuition centres at 10 centres regularly. They are given a nutritious snack, and helped with their homework from Monday to Saturday. On Saturdays, online English classes are run by TATA Proengage volunteers in 4 centres. Around 25 kids attend each of these centres. To run the tuition centre effectively, TATA Pro-engage along with DAIA together conduct online training classes for the children. 

Tuition teachers meeting

On Sep 29th, monthly meeting for tuition teachers was held at DAIA office. Mr. Francis gave an encouraging message. DAIA Director, Mrs. Hilda John heard the events that took place at each tuition centre last month. Then everyone was provided with the necessary items for the snacks to be given to the children that month.
