News Title
Dear friends,
Greetings. I am delighted to meet you all through this newsletter and share many works we have done so far.
Tuition Centre
Flood Disaster Relief Assistance
Thoothukudi District was flooded due to heavy rains from December 17th for upto a week. Saveriyapuram, Vellapatti, Kurinji Nagar and Kandasamy Puram tuition centres were affected. The floods had caused great havoc in the region and many people had to start building their lives again from scratch. We conducted a survey to assess the extent of damage and the areas of need to be addressed.
Students studying in DAIA-run tuition centers in these areas lost school bags and books.
On Jan 20th, Mr. Ramesh from TATA Consulting Engineers Ltd. and Mrs.Hilda John (DAIA, Executive Director) encouraged the children by providing them with school bags, stationery and notebooks. The bags and stationery were a gift of love from many volunteers from the TCE group. Our heartfelt thanks to them.
Mobile Library
A reading challenge program was introduced for the children studying in our tuition center. It was aimed to challenge kids as much as possible. The first round was a success with around 70 kids participating in the challenge. Prizes were given to the children who read the most books.
Pongal Celebration
Some of our tuition centers celebrated Pongal on Jan 15th, The children remembered the bounty of harvest that our land gives for us and God’s blessing on us, our families and our motherland. They enjoyed having Sakkara Pongal.
Some of our tuition children participated in the competitions held by their schools.
We are so proud of them and wish the very best in their studies.
Tuition teachers -Monthly meeting
On January 30th , a monthly meeting for tuition teachers was held at DAIA office. During this meeting Mrs. Jeya Gell shared some encouraging words to the teachers. In this meeting, the teachers said that the students have scored well in the half-yearly examination and the school bag and note book provided to the students are useful for the students. They submitted their reports for the last month and received the required snacks for the children.
Medical Camp
On January 19th, 41 patients attended the medical camp at St. Paul’s campus, Kovilpatti. Mrs. Hilda John spent time conversing with our beneficiaries, asking them what made them attend the camp every month. Many shared about their lives and the reason they come is to meet their brothers and sisters and get the nutrition powder which keep them going. In many hospitals they are still treated with stigma. In the camp they have free health check-up and free medicines. Dr.Mummoorthy examined the patients. Medicines, tonics, and nutrition powder were distributed. Their weight was monitored and recorded. The camp concluded with a good meal.
"I was bedridden for 6 months. All my family members and myself included believed that I will not make it alive. Some of my friends who attended DAIA camp, brought me fresh nutrition powder every month. The only food I had was the malt I made from the nutrition powder. I gradually became better and I came out of my illness. I strongly believe that the intake of nutrition powder every morning and night gave me chance to new life. Thank you!" - Mrs.Fatima
