Jeya Gell

Dear friends,

Greetings. I am delighted to meet you all through this newsletter and share many works we have done so far.

Vocational Training and Employment
(VOTE) Project

Tailoring training

Currently, 24 women are being trained in the second batch of tailoring training. Seven women from the first batch have started their own businesses, which is a great outcome so far. One of them has received a new sewing machine through a government scheme called TADCO.

PALAM Project (Self-Help Groups)

Four Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have been adopted for a renewal of their activities. This month has focused on building good relationships with the members and getting to know them better. The participants of the SHG and the tailoring course celebrated Pongal, a Tamil harvest festival, which provided an opportunity for community building and recreation.

Health Awareness

This month, an awareness program was held on the topic of "Preventing Anaemia in Women." Anaemia commonly affects women during their childbearing years, leading to various health problems. The importance of iron intake from food sources and regular check-ups during pregnancy was discussed. Emphasis was placed on the need for women to take care of themselves so they can better care for their families. This session took place on January 23rd and was attended by 31 women.

Tuition Centres

A total of 158 children attend our six tuition centres on all school days. They celebrated Pongal with their fellow students and enjoyed a day filled with sweet treats.

Mobile Library

On January 28th, we launched the fifth reading challenge for the year. The children were excited to borrow books for reading. This program has fostered a love of reading among students and provided a break from their regular schoolwork.

M. Suryaprakash, a 15-year-old student took part in an impromptu storytelling competition. He told a comical story that made the audience laugh heartily, earning him the prize for the competition. The district collector, Hon. K. Elambahawath, was impressed and was seen chatting with him in the accompanying picture.

Feedback from a TATA Volunteer

"I would like to thank you for allowing me to teach on various topics. Engaging with students was truly an enriching experience. The well-organized support made this program a success," said Ms. Jagadeeshwari. We thank all our volunteers who contributed to the children's well-being.

Teachers' Meeting

On January 30th, we held monthly meetings for the tuition teachers at our office. This time served as a reflection on the students' improvements and challenges, along with discussions on how to best tackle these issues. As the children approach their final exams in March, strategies for implementing best practices were discussed. Teachers submitted their monthly reports and the half-yearly marks of the children.

Medical Camp

On January 24th, we held a medical camp at St. Paul's Campus in Kovilpatti, where 42 patients attended. Dr. Mumoorthy consulted with them and prescribed medications. The attendees received nutritional powder, medicines, and a meal. We plan to conduct medical camps quarterly to maximize the use of our resources.

Embracing Elders

On January 8th, 37 elders attended the camp at Zion Campus in Tuticorin. They received their monthly grocery packs and nutritional powder. It was a time of fellowship and refreshment for the elders. Mrs. Eben Jason demonstrated a skit with an important message: never give up. The camp concluded with a hearty meal. If possible, we hope to increase the number of elders to 50 this year.

Thank you to all our supporters

We were able to do the work just because you stood behind us. Our heartfelt thanks for your consistent support in reaching out to make our vulnerable communities better.

We look forward to working with you. Thank you once again.

Reflection: Kindness

"Always help someone. You might be the only one who does."

Let us be kind and lighten the burden of those who are suffering.
