Jeya Gell

Dear friends,

Greetings. I am delighted to meet you all through this newsletter and share many works we have done so far.

Tuition Centres

This month, all eight tuition centres continued to operate with commitment and dedication. Currently, 180 children attend the study centres. This month, they have been preparing for their annual exams. Four of our children are finishing their grade 12 and preparing to enter university or trade. It is challenging for them to continue their higher education in the field of their choice since university studies are beyond their means. We are trying to support them in any way we can or connect them with people who can help. If this is an area where your heart is to support, please contact us.

Below: Ms. Gracelin (7th std), a student of Alagumuthu Nagar Tuition Centre, won first prize in an oratory competition conducted on behalf of the district-level railway department at Grace Engineering College, Thoothukudi. We are proud of her.

TATA ProEngage-Online English Lessons

Tata Pro Engage volunteers have completed their teaching for this term. 75 Children from grade 4- grade 9 participated in online English classes. The last 8 weeks have been a steep learning curve for the children and teachers who participated. We can see the difference in their studies and their confidence.

We heartily thank the volunteers who spent their weekday evenings enriching children's education. We hope that this experience has been rewarding for them as well.

Volunteer's Feedback

"It has been an immensely rewarding experience to witness the hidden talents of these children emerge. Teaching them brings me eternal happiness, and I am dedicated to helping them become fluent in English"- Ms. Manisha Sao

Tuition Centre Exposure Visit

On March 2nd, students from Saveriyapuram and Vellapatti Tuition Center were taken to the newly constructed Thoothukudi STEM Park. The students enjoyed seeing all the inventions related to science, including models of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and Chandrayaan-3. They were also fascinated by the 3D projection of marine life and wild animals. The exhibition entertained and educated the students.

Mobile Library

Reading is fundamental. It is one of the most essential ingredients to becoming all we can be.

Many families have no books for their children to read. We are committed to bringing books for children to entertain, educate themselves, and give them a glimpse of the wonder of reading. This is a seed to create a love of learning in them.

This month, 116 children participated in the "Super Reading challenge- 2"

120 books were read by the children. Prizes will be awarded to the children who read the most books in June.

If you have a collection of good books at home and would like to donate them to the library, please get in touch with us.

International women’s day

On March 8th, International Women's Day was celebrated at the DAIA office, attended by staff and tuition teachers. Dr Sornalatha David was the chief guest. She spoke about the power of education, women's independence, and their influence on the community and future generations. There were some excellent games and a lot of fun.

Embracing Elders

Forty-three elders continue to be supported through this program. On March 13th, the camp was held, grocery packs were distributed, and Mrs. Eben Jason delivered an uplifting, engaging message.

Medical Camp for HIV Patients

Fifty-eight patients attended the medical camp at Kovilpatti. Dr. Mumoorthy gave a medical checkup. They were issued medicines, nutrition packs and a good meal. We are encouraged by the program's outcomes. The patients can live longer and healthier lives, and many can work and provide for their families.

RUPA Project -Village Development A story of strength....

Ms. Janci (name changed) is 22 years old. She has been affected by a muscular degenerative condition. She cannot walk or use them for long periods. Despite what life has given her, she was encouraged to join the DAIA-run tailoring centre at Jumbulingapuram. She completed the training successfully. Her commitment and dedication to learning the skill have been unwavering. She was helped to purchase a sewing machine and start her own business from home. She is now making a living out of her skill. She takes so much pride in her creations. She is an inspiration to many who encounter her. She is confident and empowered to make financial decisions for herself. The smile that we see on her face is precious!

Our New Venture - Aloe Vera Cordial

With the current financial circumstances, we need consistent support to continue our work and help those who need it.

We have devised the idea of preparing aloe cordial for local distribution. This is also a means of getting DAIA's work out to the local neighbourhood.

We will prepare Aloe cordial in two types, with and without sugar.

The time we need to work for the community has been diverted to sustain the work. We will continue to do this and see how this venture turns out.

Smile Project

The aim of the project is to give a soft toy to a sick or needy child under 10 years old and bring a smile to their faces. Last year, the project was a huge success, bringing many smiles to children with mental challenges.

If you are interested in donating soft toys, please contact us.

Appeal for second hand books.

We do need to build our collection of books for the mobile library. If you have a colection of Tamil books that you would like to donate please contact DAIA office at admin@daiaindia.org or call mobile no: 9629522938
