Jeya Gell

Dear friends,

Greetings. I am delighted to meet you all through this newsletter and share many works we have done so far.

Career guidance and awareness programs

On April 26th, a guidance and awareness program for high school tuition students was held at the DAIA office in Kirubai Nagar, with 35 students from six centers participating. The day was filled with various activities, including discussions on personal development and how to make the most of the opportunities available to them. Students were encouraged to read and equip themselves with knowledge in preparation for the upcoming academic year. Interactive games added an element of fun, while a general knowledge quiz session sparked their curiosity. The program also included discussions about career choices related to different subjects. Students watched a short film titled “Seed,” which emphasized the importance of education and the opportunities it can provide. They also learned about wastewater management and vermicomposting, which has been modelled in the DAIA office, focusing on ‘Zero Waste.’ To foster camaraderie, the students shared a meal together, making the day of learning both enjoyable and memorable.

‘I have learned that we can use the grey water generated in our house to create a beautiful garden. I want to do the same model in my house. I also learnt that I need to protect myself from any kind addiction. Thank you for this memorable day’- Surya Prakash, grade 10.

Tuition Centres

Currently 137 children are enrolled in our centres. All of them have sat their final exams for the year and awaiting their results next month.

Summer Computer classes

Computer classes have begun at the DAIA office to help students make the most of their summer vacation. Courses offered include MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and basic computer literacy. Both theory and practical sessions are part of the curriculum. The classes are conducted by a talented teacher, Mrs. Geetha, and students are studying with enthusiasm.

Medical Camp

On April 25th, we organised a medical camp at St. Paul's Campus in Kovilpatti, where 55 patients were in attendance. Dr. Mumoorthy provided consultations and prescribed medications for the attendees. They received nutritional powder, medicines, and a meal.

Embracing Elders

On April 9th, 36 elders participated in a camp at Zion Campus in Tuticorin. Each elder received groceries and nutritional powder, and their weights were monitored and recorded. Mrs. Eben Jason shared an inspiring message. The camp concluded with a hearty meal.

Tailoring Centre - Aari Craft Workshop

The tailoring centre in Kulasekaranallur is progressing well, and the second batch of tailoring training is currently underway, with 24 women participating. To further enhance their skills, a one-week workshop on Aari embroidery designs was conducted. This type of embroidery uses colorful cotton or silk threads, combined with various embellishments, to create geometric, floral, or sometimes religious patterns. Aari embroidery is a highly sought-after skill that can generate significant income for trained women. Mrs. Rajeshwari led the workshop with dedication and enthusiasm, and all participants greatly benefited from the experience.

Sumathi, Umarani, Sudha and Suganthi, who attended the Aari work workshop said that they are planning to start a business together. ' We believe that we can earn a lot of income through this Aari work skill that we have learnt. We are grateful to supporters for giving us this golden opportunity'

Financial Literacy workshop

A financial literacy workshop was conducted for the previous batch of tailoring students. The topics discussed included budgeting, savings, investing, spending, and debts. Nineteen women participated in this workshop and found it useful.

Thank you to all our supporters

We were able to do the work just because you stood behind us. Our heartfelt thanks for your consistent support in reaching out to make our vulnerable communities better.

We look forward to working with you. Thank you once again.

Reflection: Kindness

"Always help someone. You might be the only one who does."

Let us be kind and lighten the burden of those who are suffering.
