Jeya Gell

Dear friends,

Greetings. I am delighted to meet you all through this newsletter and share many works we have done so far.

Vocational Training and Employment
(VOTE Project)

Self-Employment Training

On June 19th, a special self-employment training session was held for the women and local villagers of the Kulasekaranallur Self-Help Group (SHG), focusing on the preparation of nutrition powder. The initiative aimed to promote better health and support income generation at the grassroots level. Participants were taught how to select ingredients, understand their health benefits, and apply proper roasting techniques. They also learned how to incorporate the nutritional powder into various traditional recipes, such as Koozh, Kali, and Kozhukattai.  To reinforce the learning, nutritional koozh was distributed to all participants. The session was well-received and appreciated, equipping attendees with practical skills to enhance both nutritional well-being and sustainable livelihoods.

HIV/AIDs Awareness Program

On June 5th, an HIV/AIDs awareness program was conducted for the villagers of Kulasekaranallur. The program emphasised that HIV is transmitted through sexual contact, from HIV-positive mothers to their children, and through the sharing of needles among drug users. It highlighted the importance of chastity and mutual fidelity for both men and women, in line with the cultural principle of “one man, one woman.” Symptoms such as persistent weight loss, prolonged fever, cough, and opportunistic infections were also discussed. Participants found the program very useful in helping protect future generations.

Tailoring Centre

The second phase of the sewing training course in Kulasekaranallur concludes this June, marking a significant milestone for our trainees. During this phase, participants honed their skills by producing high-quality pillowcases and cushion covers, which are now being prepared for sale. This is an exciting step toward financial independence and empowerment. We look forward to supporting these talented women as they explore new product ideas and expand their market reach. A heartfelt thank you to the trainers, supporters, and community members who continue to make this journey possible.

Tuition Centre

This month, six tuition centres continued to operate with commitment and dedication. New students have joined our centres. We are proud to share that all our tuition students passed their exams and have been promoted to the next class. To celebrate, our centers welcomed them with sweets, smiles, and words of encouragement. A big thank you to our teachers and parents for their support

Positive Parenting Program (PPP)

The PPP Program was successfully implemented in all tuition centres. Parents express their deep appreciation for DAIA's commitment and the meaningful impact it has on their children's learning experiences.

Mobile Library

‘The reading challenge 5’ program, launched last year and ongoing since the beginning of this year, has encouraged our tuition centre children to read books and enhance their thinking skills. The initiative was met with enthusiastic participation, with children actively engaging in reading activities.

Tuition Teachers Meet

On June 30th , the monthly meeting for tuition teachers was held at the DAIA office. Mrs. Esther shared encouraging words for the teachers. Director Mrs. Hilda John asked the teachers about recent events at the tuition centres, asking about new student enrolments, how children were being welcomed, and feedback from parent meetings. Trainers were encouraged to use new strategies to support student learning. Mrs.Chitra and Mrs.Esther shared that daily lesson reviews and collecting parent signatures have helped improve student focus. The director praised their efforts and urged all teachers to guide students with greater enthusiasm this academic year. The meeting concluded with the submission of monthly reports.

Students Achievement

As part of our ongoing commitment to encouraging and supporting our students, bags were distributed to those who consistently attended academic tuition classes throughout the past year and achieved excellent grades. These prizes recognised the students' hard work and dedication, inspiring everyone to strive for their personal best. Every child was encouraged to aim high and participate in this initiative.

Embracing Elders

On June 11th, 41 elderly individuals participated in a camp at Zion Campus in Tuticorin. Mrs. Eben Jason delivered an encouraging message. Each participant received groceries, nutrition powder, and their weights were monitored and recorded. The camp concluded with a delicious meal.

Smile Program

This July, the SMILE project has been set up to bring joy and encouragement to mentally challenged and mentally retarded children. Four special schools were visited: Vidya School (Kovilpatti), Shenbaga Special School (Kovilpatti), SAH Special School, and Vidyaprakasam School (Thoothukudi). We invite you to share in the joy this endeavor brings with your generous donations.

CMA Conference

Mrs.Michel Stevens and Mrs.Hilda John attended the CMA conference in Brisbane, representing DAIA and International Needs Australia(INA). The CMA Conference was a great platform for both INA and DAIA to showcase their work and emphasise the importance of working together to benefit communities.
